In this independent review, we will be looking at a variety of different popular dog dental chews currently on the market in Australia. We want to find the chew that reigns supreme.
Dental Chews to be Compared:
Canine Greenies (all sizes)
Rawhide Chews/Pigs Ears
Nutrident Dental Chews
Criteria to be Compared:
Effectiveness at Removing Plaque
Health & Safety
As far as I’m concerned, dental chews need to be cost effective, taste good enough to work as a ‘treat’, be safe to eat, and most importantly clean your dog’s teeth. This is why I have chosen the criteria listed above when comparing the different products on the market. I’ve chosen the 4 dental chews listed above as I feel they are the more common products purchased in Australia.
My research suggests the following: When it comes to edibility, Greenies, Nutrident chews, and Rawhide chews are all delicious treats. Pedigree Dentastix are also likely to be appealing to dogs, but are definitely the least healthy of the group.
Greenies and Nutrident chews are as effective as rawhide chews when it comes to cleaning your dog’s teeth. However if your dog is a glutton it may be worth avoiding rawhide chews, as there is an increased risk of choking by swallowing the treat whole. All treats can cause gastro-intestinal upset, particularly if fed regularly. They are quite rich, and should be offered to your dog as an occasional treat. However, it seems that Greenies' new formulation has resolved a lot of these problems.
When it comes to cost, Pedigree Dentastix are the cheapest, with Nutrident and Greenies roughly the same in price. Obviously costs will vary according to where you purchase the products.
For my dog, I would happily purchase Nutrident Chews or Greenies. They are safe, effective, tasty treats and have been approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (which you should use as a standard when purchasing any product for your pet’s oral and dental health). This is an independent review of dental chews in the Australian marketplace.
